Derrick Ross + Half Face Blades
Project Scope
This is a passion project dreamed up by our very own DP, Matt Henry. The thought was - what if we could do a collaboration with Half Face Blades and an adaptive veteran athlete?! Take a prosthetic, strip it down and use it in the handle of a custom built knife made by Half Face Blades. We wanted to tell that story of connecting a veterans most impactful tool (his prosthetic limb) and a knife that he would use on countless adventures that would remind him of everything he’s been through and lives for. We’re also exploring that when opportunity comes… you can take it or leave it.
Well, it’s happening. We’re in the throws of this project thanks to so many great friends that have supported this wild idea. Connecting us with Derrick (the veteran), Andy at HFB where we made the knife and then finally an elk hunt in New Mexico . It’s all come together, we’ve filmed 75% of the project and now we’re working on the final pieces of the story. So, stay tuned.
Meet The Saltbox Team

Clay Hervey - Director (storytelling wizard)
Clear vision and passion for directing our crew is critical to the success of each project. This is where we discover the heart of the story and craft films worth sharing.

Matt Henry - Director of Photography (the camera guy)
Taking our teams vision to the lens and camera to bring life to our stories. Creating light, sound, movement and everything else that happens in front of our camera is where the magic happens.

Hunter Clark - Producer / Operations (make it happen)
Every project needs to go smooth and have a nice little fire under us to keep rolling. It’s more than producing and operations… it’s making sure things get done and get done right. The first time.
We met up with Derrick on Day 1. Chapter 1.
This is the part where we got his story, presented him with the idea, and took his 1st government issued leg to San Diego to get cut up by the Half Face Blades team. He was stoked about it to say the least.
Andy and the HFB team did not know Derrick. They only knew of the project concept through our mutual friend Jason Dickens. So we sat down with Derrick on Day 1 to tell his story so we could “introduce” Derrick to the HFB team. We also had to move quick because Derrick was planning to go on an elk hunt in a couple weeks. The plan was to get him the knife to use on the hunt.
This is Chapter 1 of the Derrick Project.
Now we’re in San Diego at the Half Face Blades headquarters. Chapter 2.
We’ve got Derricks leg, meeting the team and spending 2 days making the knife for Derrick and filming the whole process. For now, here’s some BTS photos.
